Description:
|
Map: Hertfordshire. Created by John Speed in the early seventeenth century and re-printed in the Nineteenth century. Monochrome with ornate border, the map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Inset top left is a map of 'Hartforde' with a key to significant features and a 'Scale of Pases'. Beneath this are illustrated the arms of Roger Earl of Clare and Hartford and Edward Seymour Earl of Hartford. Top right is an illustration of Verolanium the Roman city which stood where St Albans now stands, together with a paragraph describing its history. Bottom right is a lengthy paragraph describing the three battles that took place in Hertfordshire at St Albans in 1455 and 1461, and at High Barnet in 1471. Bottom left is an illustration of a globe maker and the inscription: 'Performed by John Speed and are to be sold in Popes Head Alley by John Sudbury and George Humbell Cum Privilegio. Jodocus Hondius Calavit'. The legend along the bottom says: 'Reprinted and published by Kelly & Co., and presented to the subscribers to the Post Office Directory of Herts'.
