Description:
Topographic central map of Japan for tourists published by the Welcome Society of Japan; Includes ancillary maps: Taiwan, Chart of the World, Hokkaido and Okhotsk; glossary and explanation of signs. Folds into pictorial covers with woodblock prints of a geisha and Mt. Fuji; preface describing the object and fundamental principles of the Welcome Society; commercial advertising on reverse. This map has been identified as No. 2089 of First Edition. The total issue eleven thousand. November, 1897; It appears to have been printed for English speaking tourists. Annotated [see Notes field] - Mounted on the recto is the MGS’s bookplate: “Presented by The Executors of the late Mr. A. J. Kennedy, F.R.G.S – July 8th 1910”.

In the upper left part of the bookplate in pencil is the notation: “22067 D20 (105)”. In the lower right corner of the preface is the signature of the map holder in black ink: “J. Kennedy” and written in red ink is: “London England”. Rubber stamp in blue ink: “Manchester Geographical Society”. Pencil notations in the lower margin/map’s frame.
