Between 1854-1859 Jevons was employed as assayer at the Sydney mint and also carried out detailed social surveys of the city's slums. Francis Bowyer Miller was also employed as assayer at the Sydney mint. Elizabeth and Sarah Trickett were the wife and niece of Joseph Trickett, Superintendent of the Coining Factory at the mint.
