Description:
|
Detail from the " Missa sancti stephani prothomartyris" script (fol. xxi). Large initial measures 55x58 mm. The frame is plain gold. The ground marbled. Four genii surround the central picture and the two at the top each hold a stone in one hand, and with other support a golden crown in the centre. Of the two below, the one on the left supports a green bas-relief in gold frame, representing the stoning of Stephen. The other embraces a basket full of stones. The central picture represents Stephen on one knee, with hands slightly extended; stones on his head and shoulders. Young age and vested in a gold dalmatic. A landscape behind. At the right of the initial is an interesting piece of painting representing a wound in the vellum, the torn and crumbled edge of the initial protruding.
