Description:
Portrait of Issac Watts and title page to the 'Psalms of David'. Isaac Watts was an Independent minister who became known as the "father of English hymnody". His works include "Our God, our help in Ages past" and "When I survey the wondrous cross". He was acquainted with the Wesleys and was aware of Charles' talent – he once declared that the younger man's "Come O thou Traveller unknown" was worth all the verse that he himself had written.
