View of the Manchester Assize Courts. A beautiful and elaborate building that stood on Great Ducie Street, slightly blurry figures can be seen on around the building. The Courts were designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the Venetian Gothic style. Construction began in 1859 and was completed in 1864, Strangeways Prison was included in the Waterhouse design and is still standing, itself a Grade II listed structure. The Assize Courts building was severely damaged in the 1940's during the second World War, leading to its demolition soon after the assize court abolition in 1957.
