Description:
|
Siege of Troy. Book five: Ulyssses (Odysseus) enters Ithaca at night and has all the Greek lords who conspired against him while he was at Troy beheaded. The next day he returns to his wife Penelope and all of Ithaca rejoices. Ulysses weds the daughter of Alphenon to his son Telamon (Telemachus) and he and Penelope live peacfully till the end of their days. Next begins the tale of Pyrrhus (Neoptolemus), son of Achilles and grandson of Peleus. The realm of Peleus had been taken from him by his wife's grandfather Atastus who also tried to kill Pyrrhus. Illustrated bas-de-page detail: Peleus and Pyrrhus, Pyrrhus kills Menalippus and Polisthenes. There is a floriated, illuminated full border and an illuminated initial 'N' in the text. The illustration has been identified as being painted by an artist stylistically close to William Abell, an important mid-fifteenth English illuminator. The written space is 305 x 200 mm, 2 columns and 44 lines and the script is anglicana formata by two hands.
