p(ri)uely ouer þe water op Twede to þe boughte of þe Abbay and S(ir) William Dykett þat was þo Styward of Scotlande and ma nye oþ(er)e þat comen with ham pulte ham þere in gret p(er)ile of ham self at þat time of hire lyf for þey comen ouer a brugge þat was tobroken and þe stones awaye and manye of hire co(~) panye were þere drenchede: but þe forsaide William wente ouer and oþ(er)e of his co(~)panye and comen by þe shippes of En- gelonde and quelde in a barge of Hulle .xvj.men. and after þey wente in to þe toun of Berwik by þe wat(er) syde wherfor(e) þe scottis helde þo þe toun rescuede. and axede hire hostageȝ aȝen of þe king of Engelonde // And þ(e) king sente ham worde aȝen þ(t) þey askede þe hostageȝ with wronge: siþ þ(t) þey comen in to þe toun by Engelondes side: for couenaunt was bituen ham þat þe toun shulde be rescued by þe half of Scotlande. and anon king Edwarde. þo comaundede to ȝelden þe toun or he wolde haue þe hostageȝ: and þ(e) scottis saiden þ(t) þe toun was rescued wel ynough and þ(er)to þey wolden holde ham // Whanne king Edward saugh þe scottis breke þe couenantȝ þat þey made: he was wonder wroth. and anon lete take S(ir) Thom(a)s fitȝ and S(ire) Alisaundr(e) of Seton wardeyn of Berwik þe which Thom(a)s was p(ri)soun of Dunbarr and lete ham be take ferst bifore þe oþ(er)e hostageȝ for encheson þ(t) S(ir) Alisaundreȝ fader was kep(er)e of þe toun. and þe king co(~)maundede eu(er)y day for to take .ij. hostageȝ of þe toun til þat þey were alle don vnto þe deþ but ȝif þey ȝelden þe toun. and so he shulde te- che ham for to breke hire couenauntȝ // And whanne þo of þe toun herde þese tidynges þey bicomen wonder sory and sen ten to þe king of Engelonde þat he wolde g(ra)unte ham oþer .viij. daies of respite so þ(t) bituene .CC. men of armeȝ and xx(ti) men of armeȝ myȝte by strengthe gon bituene ham in to þ(e) toun of Berwyk ham for to vitayle so þ(t) þe toun moste ben holde for rescued // And ȝif it so were þ(t) .xxj. or .xxij. or mo were slayne of þo .
