he was in litel time pult to shame and sorwe þorugh his liege men vppon whom he truste wonder muche: and p(ra)yede him for þe loue of almyghty god þ(t) he wolde mayntene him and hel- pe aȝens his enemys // þe king of Engelond had of him þo gret pietee: and bihighte him helpe i(~) soco(ur) and sente him worde þ(t) he shulde holde him in pees stille in þe Citee of Cardoille til þ(t) he had gadred his power // þo ordeynede king Edwarde of Engelond a counceil at london and let gadre his me(~) in diu(er)se shires of Engelonde and whanne he was redy he wente toward þe toun of Berwyk op Twyde and þider come to him king Edwarde of Scotlande w(t) his poer and bisegede þe toun and made wiþoute þe toun a faire toun of pauylouns and dikede ham wel al aboute so þat þey had no drede of þe scottis and made menye assaute w(t) Gonnes and w(t) o þ(er)e engynes to þe toun wher w(t) þey destroy ede many a fair hous and chirches also were beten adoun vnto þe erthe w(t) grete stones þ(t) spitously comen out of gonnes and of oþ(er) gynnes and naþeles þe scottis kepte wel þe toun þ(t) þo .ij. kinges myghte nouȝte come þ(er)in long time // And noþeles þe kinges abiden. þ(er)e so longe til þo þ(t) weren in þe toun failede vitailes and also þey were so wery of wakynge þ(t) þey wiste nouȝt what to done // And ȝe shulleth vndirstonde þ(t) þo þ(t) weren in þe toun of Ber wik þorugh hire co(~)mune counceile and hire assente lete c(ri)e vppon þe Walles þat þey myghte haue pees of þ(e) englissh men and þ(er)of þey p(ra)yden þe king and of his grace and p(ra)ye den him of trewes for.viij daies vppon þis couenaunt yif þey were nought rescuede in þ(t) side of þe toun toward scot lande of þe scottis w(t)inne. viij. daies þ(t) þey wolde ȝelde ham vnto þe king and þe toun also: and to halde þis co- uenant þey p(ro)ferede to þe king .xij. hostageȝ out of þ(e) toun of Berwyk // Whenne þ(e) hostageȝ were delyuerede vnto þ(e) kinges anon þo of þe toun sente vnto þe scottis and tolde ham of hire sorwe and meschief and þe scottis comen þo
