den ynough where w(t) to make ham m(er)ye // þo made þ(e) Baillol his men þat were woundede gon to ship for to wende in to Engelonde for to hele hire woundes: and in þ(t) same time þ(er)e was a flem(~)ynge. in þe see. a st(ro)ng þeef a robbo(ur) þ(t) me callede Crab. and þis flem(~)yng was dryuen out of Flaundreȝ for his wickednesse: and þ(er)fore he wherfore he come in to Scot- londe and helde w(t) þe scottis and dede as muche harme vnto englisshe me(~) as he myghte // And þis Crab mette in þe see þe Bailloles men þat were woundede in þ(e) bataile þ(t) were sent aȝen in to Engelonde for to hele hire woundes and þis Crab ȝaf vnto ham a g(re)t assaute and wolde haue quelde ham eu(er)y- chone: but þ(e) englisshe men defendede ham wel and manly- che and descomfitede Crab. and his co(~)panye and þo gan he for to flee in to Scotlande // And as he com toward sent Johnes toun he fande a g(re)t co(~)panye of scottis þ(t) were come aȝen togedre aft(er) þ(e) descomfiture of Gaskmore. þe. whiche bisegede baillol and his me(~) in þ(e) same toun of sent John and anon tolde þe Scottis how he was desconfited of þe englissh men þat were sore woundede at Gaskmore þat wente toward Engelond for to hele h(er)e woundes and saide vnto þe scottis þ(t) þey shulde haue no g(ra)ce ne myghte aȝens Edward baillol. for enchesoun þ(t) he had scomfited and enpeyred al þ(e) chy- ualrye of Scotlande. with an handful of men as to acoun- te aȝens þe scottis þ(t) were slayne wherfore he counceilede ham for to remeue þe sege fram sent Johnes and kepe ham in þe best manere þ(t) þey couþe and myghte // þe Scottis vndirstoode þo þ(t) Crab. saide ham soþ and forsoke þe sege & wenten þennes by nyghte and halpe ham self in þe beste ma- nere þ(t) þey myghte .// Whanne þis tidinge was knowe þorugh Scotlande how þ(t) þe lordes and knyȝtes were scomfitede at Gaskmore of Scotlande þorugh S(ir) Edward of Baillol ȝe shulle vndirstonde þ(t) þe lordes and ladies and gentiles of Scotlande comen wonder faste vnto sent Johnes toun. and ȝolden ham vnto Baillol and to him deden homage
