litel peple as þe Baillol hath in wynge: done vs so muche t(ra)- vaille and sorowe Now certis it semeth vs þ(t) he wercheþ by g(ra)ce for he is wonder g(ra)cious in his querell: and alle we cert(es) shullet ben ded: er þ(t) we may come to him vs for to ȝelde siþ þ(t) his fader sette of vs no p(ri)s // And amo(~)g alle oþ(er)e þinges þe Baillol and his peple passed þe water of Erne so þ(t) S(ire) Rog(er) þ(e) Swynertou(~) þe sone was fers and ang(ri) and went forþ and þey saugh muche peple of me(~) of armeȝ ful wel arrayed and forth þey wente vnto ha(~) and w(t) ham foughten. and quelde as manye as wolde abide or take and noþeles at þat assaut þey wende þ(t) it had ben þ(e) g(re)te host of Scotlande and whanne it com to þe morne þey gadred ham togidere and restede ha(~) a while // But þ(e) whiles þ(t) þ(e) englisshe men restede ham: þe noble Barou(~) Thom(a)s of Vesty. and þe noble Baroun of Stafforde prekeden hire hors vp and doun by þe hull for to kepe þe Estres of þe cuntr(e) // And as þey p(re)keden vp an doun þey saughe a gret host of good array ordeigned in þre wynges w(t) helmes and sheldes shynyng comynge vppon ham // And þo come .ij. lordes aȝen vnto þe Baillols folc and saide: Now for þe loue of almyghty god beth of good co(~)forte for ȝe shulle haue bataille anon right // And þo spak S(ire) Fouk þ(e) sone of Garrein a baroun of grete renoun and of dedeȝ of armeȝ. Sires lordingeȝ vndirstondeth þat y wile seyn: y haue sav menye dyuerse wingeȝ as wel among saraceneȝ and geweȝ as among þe scottis and ȝit sav y neu(er)e þe ferthe p(ar)t of þe winge fighten and þ(er)fore ȝif we wile abide oure enemys we beth ynowe for to fighten aȝens ham but ȝif þ(t) we ben nouȝt of good herte and of good wille for to fighte w(t) ha(~) certes we ben ful fewe aȝens þis companye // And þ(er)fore for þe loue of god take we vnto vs good h(er)te and lete vs ben bolde. and þenke we noþ(er) in our wy- fes neiþ(er) oppon our children but onliche to conq(e)re ha(~) in bataile and þorugh þe helpe of oure lord god oure enemys we shulle ou(er)come// And w(t) þat come þe host of scottis toward ham ful serely and aȝens S(ire) Edward þ(e) Baillol in þre batailes
