Description:
The words ' Edward 2 ' are written in the top margin. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' A ' introduce the tale of how Thomas of Lancaster is imprisoned at York, where he is tried before the King's Justice, but not allowed to answer the charges of being a traitor. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

castr(e) was biheded at Pountfr(e)t and .v. barou(~)s honged & d(ra)we þ(er)e Ca(o) C(mo) .iiij(xx). xviij(o) And now y shal telle ȝow of þe noble Erl Thom(a)s of .Lan- castre whanne he was taken and brought to york me- nye of the Citee were ful glad and vppon him criede w(t) hie voice. A sire traitour ȝe arn welcome blessed be god: for now shal ȝe haue þe reward þat longe tyme ȝe haue deseruede & caste vppon him manye snow balles and manye oþ(er)e rep(ro)ues deden him: but þe gentil erl þat suffrede and said nother on ne oþ(er) // And in þ(e)same time þe king herde of þ(t) scomfiture and was ful glad and in hast com to Pountfret / and S(ire) Hugh þe Spens(er) and S(ire) Hugh his sone. and S(ir) Joh(a)n erl of Arundell. and S(ire) Edmund of Wodestoke þe kinges broþ(er) erl of kent and S(ire) Aymer of Valence erl of Penbrok and maister Rob(er)t of Baldok a fals piled clerk þ(t) was p(ri)uee and duellede in þe kinges court and alle come þider w(t) þe king // And S(ire) Raf of Beeston ȝaf vp þe Castel to þe king and þe king entrede in to þe Castel and S(ire) Andreu. of Harkela a fals tyraunt þorugh þe kinges co(~)maundeme(~)t nome w(t) him þe gentil Erl Thom(a)s to Pountfrett and þ(er)e he was p(ri)souned in his owene castell þat he had newe made þat stood aȝens þe Abbay of king Edward and S(ire) Hughe þe Spenser þe fader and S(ir) Hugh his sone cast & thought how and in what manere þe good erl Thom(a)s of Lan- castr(e) shulde ben dede wiþoute ony Jugement of his peris wher fore it was ordeigned þorugh þe kinges Justiceȝ þat þe king shulde pulte vppo(~) hi(~) poynte(s) of tretrie and so it bifel þat he was lad to þe barr(e) by fore þe kinges Justiceȝ bare heed as a þef in a fair halle w(t)inne his owene castel þ(t) he had made þ(er)inne many a fair feste boþe to riche and eke to pore // And þese were his .
