The words ' Edward 2 ' are written in the top margin. The tale of Robert Holland the traitor. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' T ' introduce the tale of how Earl Thomas of Lancaster does not want to go to hide any further north nearer Scotland in case he gets accused of treason, but he is forced to do so by Sir Roger Clifford. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

and saide to him self O. almyghty god. how myȝte Robert Holand fynde in his herte me to bitraye siþenes þat y haue loued him so muche .o. god wel may now a man se by him þat no man may disteyne anoþ(er) raþ(er)e þan he þat he most t(ru)st vppon: he hath ful euele ȝelde my goodnesse and þe worship þat y to him haue done: and þorugh my kyndenesse haue hy(~) auauncede and made him hie fram lowe and he maketh me go fram hie in to lowe. but ȝit shal he dye in euele deth Of þe scomfiture of Burbrigg(e) Cap(o) C(mo). iiii(xx). xvij(mo). The good Erl Thom(a)s of Lancastre. Hunfray þe Bohon Erl of Herforde and þe Barouns þ(t) wiþ ham were nome counceil bituene ham at þe ffrere p(re)chours at Pount fret. þo þoughte Thom(a)s oppon þe traitrie of Rob(er)t Holande and saide in rep(ro)ue. Allas Holande me hath bitrayed. ay ys in þe reed. of sum euel shreede // And by co(~)mune assent þey shulde alle wende to þe Castel. of Dunstanburgh þe whiche p(er)teynede to þe Erldome of Lancastr(e). and þ(t) þey shul de abide þ(er)e til þat þe king had forȝeue ham his mal talent but whanne þe good erl Thom(a)s þis herde he ansuerede in þis manere and saide. Lordes quod he ȝif we gon toward þe North. men wilen seyne þ(t) we gon towarde þe Scottes and so we shullen ben holde traitours for cause of distaun- ce þat is bituene king Edward and Rob(er)t þe Brus þat made him king of Scotland and þ(er)fore y seye as touching my self. þat y wile gon no ferthere in to þe North þan to myn owene castel of Pountfret // And whenne S(ir) Roger Clifford herde þis. he ros op anon in wraþ and drow his swerd and suore by almyghty god and by his holy names but ȝif þat he wolde gon with ham he shulde ben dede & þat he wolde sle him þ(er)e // þe noble and gentil erl Thom(a)s of Lancastr(e) was sore adrad and saide faire sires y wile gon w(t) ȝow whider so eu(er)e ȝe me lede: þo wente þey toged(er)es in to þe North. and w(t) ham þey had. vij. C. men of armes and come to Burbrigge //And whanne S(ir) Andrev of Herkela.
