Description:
The word 'John' is written in the top margin of the folio. The tale of how when King John hears he risks losing his realm, he surrenders to Pope Innocent the Third's demands, and takes a vow to pay a yearly levy to the Pope and to make good the wrongs he has done to the church and people. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'T' introduce the next tale, of the letter of King John to the court of Rome. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

deþe. // þo sente he to þe pope a messanger and seyde þ(t) he wolde ben iustified and come to amendement in alle manere þinges at his owene wille: þe messangers come to þe pope and tolden him þe kinges wille. and saide þ(t) he wolde come to amendeme(~)t in alle þinges and wolde make satisfacciou(~) to alle manere me(~) after þe popes ordinaunce. þo sente þe pope aȝen in to Engelonde Pandolf and oþ(er)e messagers and comen to Kaunterbery þ(er)e þe king abode. and þe .xiii. day of May. þe king made an oth for to stande to þe popes ordinance bifore Pandolf þe legate. in alle man(er)e þinges for þe whiche he was accursed. and þat he shulde make ful restituciou(~). to alle men of holy chirche. and of reli gioun of þe goodes þat he had take of ham aȝens here wille: and alle þe grete lordes of Engelond suore vppon þe book and by þe haly dome þat ȝif þe king wolde nouȝt holde his oth þey seide þat þey wolde make him hade hit by strengthe. // þo pulte þe king him to þe court of Rome and to þe pope and þo ȝaf vp þe reume of Engelond. and of Jrland. for him and for his heires for eu(er)e mo þat shulde come after him. so þat king Joh(a)n. and his heires shulde take þo .ij. reaumes of þe popes hande and shulde halde . þo .ij. reaumes of .þe pope as to fer me paynge eu(er)y ȝere to þe court of Rome a .M(l). marc of siluer and þo nome þe king þe croune of his heuede and sette him on his knees and þese wordes saide in heryng of alle þe grete lordes of Engelonde: here. y resigne vp þe croune and þe reaume of Engelond in to þe popes hande.
