þey pulte here seles to þat o part and þey þat comen in þe kin- ges name pulte here seles to þat oþere of þe endentures: and þe .iiij. bisshoppes aboue saide toke þat o p(ar)t of þe endentures with ham. and þat oþ(er) p(ar)t of þe endentures þey bere w(t) ham for to shewe þe king// Whanne þ(e) king saugh þe fourme and vnderstode: he helde him ful wel payed of alle man(er)e þinges as þey had ordeigned saue as touchinge þe restituciou(~) of þe goodes for to make aȝen to þat þing he nolde nouȝt accorde. & so he sente worde aȝen to þe forsaide .iiij. bisshoppes þat þey shulde don oute and pulte away þat o poynt of restitucioun and þey ansuered þat þey nolde nouȝt done out o word // þo sente þe king to þe Erchebisshop by þo .iiij. bisshoppis þat he shulde come to Kaunterbery for to speke with him and sente vnto him sauf condit vnder plegges. þat is to seyn. his justiceȝ Gilbert Peytevyn. Will(ia)m de la Breuer. and Joh(a)n le Fitȝ Hughe þat in here conduit sauflich he shulde come and gon aȝene at his wille: and in þis man(er)e þe Erchebisshop Stephene come vn to Kaunterbery // And whanne þe Erchebisshopp was come: þe king came to Chilh(a)m for he wolde come no nere Kaunterbery at þat tyme: but he sente by his t(re)sorer bisshop of Wynchestre. þ(t) he shulde done out of þe endentures þe clause of restitucioun for to make of þe goodes // And þe Erchebisshop made his oth. þat he wolde neu(er)e don out o word þ(er) of ne chaunge of þat þe bisshoppes had spoken and ordeignede: and so þe Erchebisshop wente aȝen to Rome wiþouten ony more doynge // King Joh(a)n þo was muchel wroþ(er)e þo: þan eu(er)e he was bifore and lete make a comune crie þorugh out al Engelond þat alle þo þ(t) hadde holy chirche rentes and wente ou(er) þe see: þat þey shulde come aȝen in to Engelond at a certayn day: and elles þey sholde lese her Rentes for eu(er)more and þ(t) he co(~)maundede to eu(er)y sherref þorugh out Engelond þat þey shulde enquere ȝif ony bisshop.
