The words 'Richard I' appear in the top margin. Red rubrication and an illuminated initail 'A' introduce the story of King Richard I and his crusade to win back the Holy Land. The tale of how he hears his brother, Earl John, plans to crown himself King in his absence, and how Richard is thrown into prison by the Emporor of Almaigne. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

And after þis king Henry regnede Ric(hard) his sone a st(ro)ng man and a worthy and also bolde: and he was crou- ned at Westmynstr(e) of þe Erchebisshop Baldewyne of Kaunt(er) bery þe .iiij. day of Septembr(e): and þ(e) .ij(e). ȝer of his regne. king Richard him self and Baldewyne þe Erchebisshop of Kaunt(er) bery. and Hubert bisshopp of Salesbery. and Randulph Erl of Gloucestr(e) and oþ(er)e many lordes of Engelond. went in to þ(e) holy lond and in þ(t) viage deide þ(e) Erchebisshop of Kaunt(er)- bery and king Richard wente bifore in to þ(e) holy lande & reste nouȝt til þat he come forth in his way vnto Cipres. and toke Cipres w(t) grete force. and syyþen he wente forth to ward þe holy lande and gette aȝen as muche as þe c(ri)stene men had loste bifore. king Richard gette it and co(~)querede aȝen þorugh gret myght sauf onely þe holy crois // And whan king Richard come to þe toun(~) of Acres for to gete þe Citee: a gret debate aros bituene him and þe king of ff(ra)unce. so þat king Richard wente aȝen in to ff(ra)unce. and was wroth toward þe king of ff(ra)unce. but er king Richard wente aȝen he toke þe citee of Acres // And whanne he had taken hit he duellede in þe Citee a while: but to him come tydinge þat þ(e) Erl John. of Oxenford his broþ(er) wolde haue seised al Engelond in to his hande and Normandie also. and wol de croune hym king of þe lande // And whanne king Ri- chard herde þis tidinge: he wente aȝen toward Engelonde with al þe spede þat he mighte: but þe Duk of Estrich mette wiþ him and toke him and brouȝte him vnto þe Emp(er)our of Almaigne. and þe Emp(er)o(ur) brouȝte him in to his p(ri)soun(~). and afterward he was delyuered for an huge Raunsome þat is for to paye a C.M(l). pounde //And for which raunsome to ben payede ech oþ(er) chalis of Engelond was melte and made in to mone. and alle þe monkes
