Normandie. and whanne þe king had regned .iiij. ȝere: þere aros a gret debate bituene him and þe Erchebisshop of Caunt(er)bery. Ancelyn(~). for cause þ(t) þe Erchebisshop wolde noȝt g(ra)unte þe king for to take taillages of chirches at his wille and þ(er)fore eftsone þe Erchebisshop wente ouer see to þe court of Rome and duellede w(t) þe pope // And in þe same ȝere þe Duk of Normandie com in to Engelonde for to speke w(t) his broþer. and amonges oþ(er)e þing: þe Duk of Norman die forȝaf to þe king his broþ(er) þo forsaide þousande pounde by ȝere þat he shulde paye him. and w(t) good loue þ duk wente þo aȝen in to Normandie // And whanne þo .ij. ȝer were gone: þorugh entycement of þe Deuel and of luther men: a gret debate aros bituene ham: þe king and þ(e) duk. so þ(t) þe king þorugh counceil went ou(er) see in to Norman die. and whanne þe king of Engelonde was comen in to Normandie: alle þe grete lordes of Normandie turnede þo to þe king of Engelonde and helde aȝens þe Duk hire o- wene lord: and him forsoke and to þ(e) king ham ȝolden and alle þe castels and þe goode tounes of Normandie and sone aft(er) was þe duk taken an lad w(t) þe king in to Engelond. and þe king lete pulte þe Duk in to p(ri)soune. and þis was þo veniaunce of god. for whan þe Duk wa(s) in the holy lande god ȝaf him suche might & honour þere wherfore he was chose to ben of i(e)hr(usa)l(e)m. and he wol- de nouȝt ben it. but forsoke it / and þ(er)fore god sende hy(~) þat shame and despite to ben pult in to his broþeres p(ri)soun(~) // þo seisede king Henr(y) al Normandie in to his hande and helde it al his lyfes tyme. and in þ(e) same ȝere come þe Bisshop Ancelyn(~) fram þe court of Rome in to Engelonde aȝen and þe king & he were accordede // And in þe ȝere next comynge after þer bigan a gret de bate bituene king Philippe of ff(ra)unce and king Henre of Engelonde // wherfore king Henre wente in to Nor-
