Description:
The header 'Edward confessor' appears in the top margin, and 'Harold (cxxxi)' in the margin. The tale of the death of King Edward. The words 'martyr sent' have been erased next to 'Thomas of Kaunterbery'. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' W ' introduce the tale of how Harold, Godewynne's son becomes King, and how Duke William of Normandy seeks revenge on him for Alvred's death. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

man and abode þ(e) m(er)cy and þe wille of god // And þo .ij. pilg(ri)mes he lete bifore ham come and ȝaf ham riche ȝiftes and bitoke ham vnto god // And also. þe Abbot of Westmyn- stre he lete bifor him come and toke him þat ryng in ho- nour of god and sent marye and of sent Joh(a)n þe Eu(au)nglist and þe abbot nome it and pulte it among(es) oþ(er)e reliqes. so þat it is at Westmynstr(e) and eu(er)e shal be // And so lay þe king sike til þe .xije. even: and þo deide þe good king Edward at Westmynstr(e) and þ(er)e he lith. for whos loue god haþ done many myracles. and þis was in þ(e) ȝer of incarnaciou(~) of oure lord j(es)hu c(ri)st .ml. lxv ȝer. and aft(er) he was t(ra)nslated and pulte in to þe shryne þorugh þe noble [martir sent] Thom(a)s of Kaunt(er)bery. How Harold þa was Godwynes sone was made king and how he scapede fro [...] // þe Duk of Britaigne Capo Co. xjo. Whanne sent [...] Edward was gone out of þis worlde and was gon to god and worthily entered as perteynede to such a lord for to ben þe barons of þe lande wolden haue had Edward Helyng(us) sone to Edward þe outlaghe þat was Edmundes sone Jrensyde to ben king for as muche as he was most kyndest kinges blood of þe reaume // But Haroldus sone þorugh þe Erl Godewynne and þe strengþ(e) of his fader Go- dewynne and þorugh oþ(er)e grete lordes of þe reaume þat were of his kyn and vnto him syb. seysede al Engelond in to his hand and anon lete croune him kyng after þe entereme(~)t of sent Edward // This Harold. þat was Go- dewynes sone þe secunde ȝer aft(er) þ(t) sent Edward was ded wolde haue gon in to fflaundres but he was dryue þorugh tempest in to þe cuntre of Pountyf and þ(er)e he was take & brought to þe Duk William // And þis Harald wende þo þ(t) þe Duk William wolde haue ben avenged vppon him for enchesoun þ(t) þe Erl Godewyne þ(t) was Haroldes fader had lete quelle Alured þ(t) was sent Edwardes broþ(er). and p(ri)n- cipally for enchesou(~) þ(t).
