Description:
Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'H' introduce the tale of how King Adelbright (Ethelbert) and King Elfride fight the Britons in Wales, and how King Adelbright is slain. There are ink annotations in the margin 'Brecinial Heythroy' and 'Rex powysie'. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

at leycestr and fram þennes þey wolde gon in to Walis & destroye þe Erchebisshopp of Karlyoun(~) and alle þo þat hadde refused se(~)t Austyn How king Adelbright and þe king Elfride quelde Brecynal þat was king of Britou(~)s þat [helde þe cuntr of Leicestr Capo. xxiiij. xixo.] Hit bifel so þat þ(er)e was a king. Britoun þat helde þe cuntre of Leycestr and al þe cuntre aboute him of Brecynal. and þi(s) king Britoun(~) herde telle þat þo .ij. englisshe kinges wolden mete þere at Leycestr for to wende in to Walis: he lete ordeigne al þe poer þat he had for to fighte wiþ þese .ij. king(es) but litel it auailede him for his folc þat he had were slayne and him self fledde and loste his landes for eu(er)more // And þese .ij. kinges. Adelbright and Elfride duellede a while at Leycestr and dep(ar)teden þe lande amonges ham and to- ken homages and feauteȝ of folc of þe cuntree and after þey wenten toward Walis. and þo of Walis had herde telle of þe scomfiture þat Brecynal had at Leycestr and were wonder sore adrad of þo .ij. kinges: And nome and chosen amonges ham goode men and holy of monkes and p(ri)stes and of oþ(er) folc gret plente þat wenten barfoote and wol leward for to haue mercy of þo .ij. kinges // But þo king(es) were so sterne and so wikkede þat þey nolden neu(er)e speke wiþ ham but quelde ham eu(er)ychone. allas þe sorwe for þey ne sparede ham nomore þan þe wolf doth þe shepe but smyten of þe hedes of eu(er)ychone and so alle were þ(er)e martrede þat to ham come þat is to vndirstande .v.C. and xl. //and afterward þo .ij. kinges wenten fro þennes to Bangor for to quelle alle þo þat þey mighten þere fynde of þe Britouns and whanne þe Britou(~)s þat herden þey assemblede and or- deigneden al hire poer for to fighte wiþ ham // þo was þ(er)e a Baroun(~) in Walis þat me callede Bledrik of Cornewaile þat som tyme was lord of Deuenesshire. but þe king Adel bright had dryuen him in to Walis and ȝeuen him bataile and at þat bataile was king Adelbright slayn and Elfride
