Description:
The tale of how Engist gained power over the whole land. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' W ' introduce the tale of how Vortiger went into Wales (Walys). The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

ben holden faste bisides Salesberye oppon a hille . and Engist shulde come þeder with .iiij. C. knightes wiþoute mo and þe king wiþ as meny of þe wiseste of his lande // And at þat day þe king come w(t) his counceil as it was ordeigned : but Engist had warned his knightes p(ri)ueleche and ham com(~)aunded þat eu(er)ich of ham shulde pulte a long knyf in his hose . and whanne he saide faire sires now is time to speke of loue and pes : eu(er)ich anon shulde drawe his knif and sle a britoun(~) . and so þey q(ue)l- de xxx. Ml. and lxj. of knightes and wiþ muche sorwe many of ham ascapede and Vortiger him self was taken and lad to Twongcastel and pulte in to prisoun(~). and somme of Engistes men wolde þat þe king had ben brend al quik // And Vortiger þo to haue his lif g(ra)untede ham as muche as þey wolde axen and ȝaf op al þe lande. tounes and casteles citees and Burghes to Engist and to his folc and alle þe britouns fledde þennes in to Walys and þere helde ham stille . And Engist wente þorugh þe lande and seisede al þe lande wiþ fraunchises and in eu(er)y place lete caste a doun chirches and houses of Religioun(~) and destroiede c(ri)stendome þorugh þe lande and lete chaunge þ(e) name of þe lande þat no man of his were so hardy after þat tyme to calle þis lande Britaigne : but calle it Engisteslande . and he dep(ar)tede al þat lande to his me(~) and þe(r) made .vij. kinges for to strenþ(e) þe land þat þe britouns shulde neu(er) after comen þ(er)in- ne // þe ferste kingdome was Kent þere þat Engist him self regnede and was lord and maister ou(er) alle þe oþere // Anoþer king had Southsex where now is Chichestr // þe þridde king had Westsex // þe . ferþ(e) king had Essex // þe vifte king had Estangill þat now is called Northfolc . Southfolc Mercheme- riche þat is to sayn þe Erldome of Nichole // þe vj . had Leicestr shire Norh(a)mptsshire H(er)ford and Huntyngdon // þe vij . hadde Oxenforde . Gloucestr .
